Dates:

The summit will take place from April 7th to 9th, 2025.

Location:

The venue for the summit is the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, Zambia.

Theme:

The summit will be guided by the theme: “Understanding the knowledge and skills gaps in Africa’s Trade in Services Industry: Empowering Africa’s workforce in the AfCFTA era”.

Participation:

The event is designed to be an interactive forum with the aim of bringing together various stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities in the tourism sector. The summit is expected to attract participants from UN Tourism Member States. It is a unique opportunity to establish regional partnerships for faculty development and student exchange programs

Aims of the Summit

The summit aims to provide a platform to:

  • Re-introduce the UN Tourism Education Guidelines as a foundation for building human capacity in the tourism sector.
  • Understand the human capacity needed to grow tourism services in Africa.
  • Create a platform for educators, employers, and policymakers to collaborate on human resource development.
  • Reduce the gap between educators and the industry in Africa.
  • Promote dialogue on job creation within the tourism sector.
  • Define learning and career paths in the industry.
  • Analyze innovative learning and teaching methods.
  • Encourage collaboration among educators in the region and beyond.
  • Position education as a critical component of tourism development.
  • The event will feature experts from diverse backgrounds including academia, industry practitioners, and various support organizations. The expected participation of the United Nations Tourism Secretary General, H.E Mr Zurab Pololikashivili, elevates the status of the Summit and indicates its significance.

The summit anticipates the following outcomes:

  • Increased understanding of the UN Tourism Education Guidelines.
  • Repositioning the role of education in tourism development in Africa.
  • Increased understanding of intra-Africa skills development for services under the AfCFTA.
  • Establishment of student and faculty exchange programs.
  • Increased understanding of available learning and career paths in tourism.
  • Establishment of an annual activity that will provide a public recruitment portal.
  • Increased participation of employers in addressing human resource development.
  • Increased research specific to tourism in African academic institutions.
